Kenny Shields & Streetheart

Friday Jul 18th, 2008 - 11:15 - 12:30 AM - Stage 2

An honour for only a select few artists, Kenny and Streetheart were inducted into the Hall of Fame based on their impressive legacy of excellence and their undiminished fan loyalty which is still so strong even to this day. After 30 years, Kenny and the band continue to play with a fierce energy and precision that other bands would be hard-pressed to match and they remain a benchmark in their industry. Everyone from veteran promoters to longtime loyal fans can't help but be impressed at how GOOD this band still is. Just come to a show and watch the band work. You'll agree this isn't just hype. Kenny, Daryl and Jeff along with longtime members Blair DePape and Tim Sutton continue to do what Streetheart has always done from the very beginning which is to deliver high quality shows fueled by an "absolutely everything they've got" attitude. It's all done with a level of ease and confidence that only comes with their kind of experience. That, combined with great songs, is a major part of what makes their shows so memorable. They know their fans deserve the best and this only highlights the level of friendship and respect the band have for each other, as well as for the history of Streetheart. If you haven't seen Kenny Shields and Streetheart lately, you owe it to yourself to see one of Canada's premier bands, and see that after 3 decades and a million records sold, what made the band so special then is still so clearly evident today.

Streetheart was a Canadian rock band from Regina, Saskatchewan. In 1975, vocalist Ken Shields (born in Nokomis, Saskatchewan), keyboard player Daryl Gutheil and bassist Ken Sinnaeve formed the band Wascana. After being renamed Witness, the group became Streetheart when guitarist Paul Dean and drummer Matt Frenette joined in 1977. The band released Meanwhile Back in Paris the following year and Under Heaven over Hell in 1979, but Frenette and Dean dropped out soon after to found Loverboy. Streetheart played together until 1984, releasing Quicksand Shoes (1980), Drugstore Dancer (1980), Action: Best of Streetheart (1981), the self-titled Streetheart (1982), Dancing with Danger (1983), and the double live album Live After Dark (1983). Record sales earned them six gold albums and four platinum albums; the single "Under My Thumb" achieved gold single status.

Arguably Streetheart's most popular single, "Under My Thumb" (1979), was a remake of a song by the Rolling Stones, who were an early Streetheart influence. At the peak of their career, Streetheart toured with several Canadian rock bands including Chilliwack, Rush, Toronto, Harlequin, Max Webster (see Kim Mitchell), Aldo Nova, April Wine, Headpins and with American bands including Sammy Hagar, Styx, Kansas, Blue Öyster Cult, and with Australia's AC/DC.

Streetheart received two Ampex Golden Reel awards, a Music Express Magazine Award, and a Chimo Award (Canadian Country Music Award) and were voted the most popular Canadian act in the Peoples' Choice Awards. In 2003, Streetheart was inducted into the Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Hardline recorded their own version of the Streetheart song 'Hot Cherie' for their 1992 album, Double Eclipse.

Frehley's Comet recorded their own version of 'Dancing with Danger' for their 1988 album, Second Sighting, despite alterations by Ace Frehley, Dana Strum, and Spencer Proffer.

DARYL GUTHEIL BIO

DARYL GUTHEIL

Growing up in a musical family in Regina, Daryl’s first instruction was on the trumpet at the age of seven. Soon after, his singing skills began to surface when he joined a semi-professional boy’s vocal group that included his older brother Don. The experience proved invaluable, as the group performed around Western Canada, made numerous appearances on television, recorded music for educational radio broadcasts, and released a number of record albums.

While continuing on the trumpet with local concert and jazz bands, Daryl’s interest in rock music was solidified at age 13 when his parents gave him an electric guitar. Within a few months he and his brother were playing with the Andantes, one of the city’s top young rock bands. Over the next few years the group performed at high school dances, town halls, and summer resorts around the prairies, eventually recording a single and touring the Midwest and Pacific Northwest states.

Becoming interested in the keyboard at age 16, it quickly became his main instrument, and in 1970 he joined Wascana, a six piece group featuring a full horn section. The band went on to enjoy success as session musicians and on the college and club circuit throughout Western Canada and the American Midwest, and Daryl began to gain experience creating horn arrangements for radio and television ads, and writing songs for the band. It was also during this period that Daryl came in contact with bassist Spider Sinnaeve and vocalist Kenny Shields. The three were soon working together in a reincarnation of Kenny’s former band Witness.

In October 1976 Streetheart was born when Daryl, Spider, and Kenny, along with guitarist Paul Dean and drummer Matt Frenette met in Regina to begin two months of writing and rehearsing. The all-night sessions led to a major recording contract and in the fall of 1977 the band entered a Toronto studio to begin production of their debut album, the classic ‘Meanwhile Back in Paris…’. Writing and co-writing material on all of the band’s releases, Daryl’s soaring backing vocals and rhythmically refined keyboard approach have left a lasting imprint on the Streetheart sound.

In recent years, in addition to raising three kids with his wife Kathy, Daryl has continued performing with Streetheart, has toured Canada, the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East, and has guested on keyboards, trumpet, guitar, and vocals on more than two dozen albums. In 2003, Daryl Gutheil and his fellow Streetheart bandmates were inducted into the Western Canadian Music Association Hall of Fame.

KENNY SHIELDS & STREETHEART

Action,Action...read all about it! The song remains the same and Streetheart, just like that famous opening track from their debut album, are still an important and enduring part of Canadian rock history. Formed in 1976, Kenny Shields, Daryl Gutheil, Spider Sinnaeve, Paul Dean and Matt Frenette began winning audiences over with their combination of raw talent and musical power. Led by Kenny the band built a strong and loyal fan base and the release of "Meanwhile Back in Paris…" showed this was a band with a very exciting future. "Meanwhile" quickly went platinum and the band received a Juno for "Most Promising Canadian Group". Streetheart followed that with a string of gold and platinum albums as well as a gold single for their definitive version of the Rolling Stones’ "Under My Thumb". They kept building their audience throughout the country and although there were member changes — with John Hannah replacing Paul Dean on "Under Heaven, Over Hell" and Herb Ego replacing Matt Frenette on "Quicksand Shoes" — Kenny, Daryl and Spider remained the constant and definined the Streetheart sound with their self-produced "Drugstore Dancer". In 1981 Jeff Neill took over for John Hannah as guitarist and along with the Kenny, Daryl and Spider, wrote and produced the most successful album of their career - the self-titled "Streetheart" album. It still remains a fan favorite today and contains many of Streetheart’s most popular songs. However, time and the task of trying to break through into the US market finally took its toll on the band. With justifiable internal frustration and management incapable of doing the type of business that was needed to be successful, the boys called it quits in 1984.

Fast forward to 2003...

KENNY SHIELDS BIO

KENNY SHIELDS.

Kenny Shields was born and raised in the farming community of Nokomis Saskatchewan, and his passion for music and entertaining emerged at the age of six when he entered and won an amateur talent show. While continuing his interest in music and singing, upon graduation from secondary school he moved to Saskatoon to attend university but was immediately recruited by the city’s premiere band – Witness Incorporated.

Kenny’s lifelong dream began to take shape as the band built a loyal fan base across the country, scoring with a string of national radio hits including "I’ll Forget Her Tomorrow", "Jezebel" and "Harlem Lady, all featuring Kenny’s unmistakable vocals. After touring with such legendary artists as Roy Orbison and Cream, tragedy struck in 1970 when Shields was critically injured in an automobile accident that sidetracked him from music for several years.

In 1975, after a period of convalescence, Kenny moved to Winnipeg to join a band originally from Saskatchewan called Wascana, whose members included bassist Spider Sinnaeve and keyboard player Daryl Gutheil. The voice was re-energized, the stamina returned, the band gelled, and after relocating to Saskatoon, they became Witness again.

While on the Alberta touring circuit, Shields struck up a friendship with guitarist Paul Dean and drummer Matt Frenette and in October 1976, with Witness having finished its run, Kenny, Paul, Matt, Spider, and Daryl began rehearsals in Regina, the five forming the quintessential prairie powerhouse band of the late 1970s and early 1980s - Streetheart. With stunning instrumental talent, and with Shields, the “born entertainer armed with one of the greatest voices in rock” up front, Streetheart quickly found success, selling into the millions and headlining shows from coast to coast. Kenny and Streetheart recorded a total of six studio albums and one double live album.

The band topped the Canadian charts with non-stop hits such as "Action", "Hollywood", “Here Comes the Night”, "Under My Thumb", "Tin Soldier", "Look In Your Eyes", "What Kind of Love Is This", "One More Time" and "Snow White" – all songs that remain standards on radio playlists. Along the way they earned a total of six gold albums, four platinum albums, a gold single, two Ampex Golden Reel awards, a Music Express Peoples' Choice Award as Most Popular Canadian act, and a Juno Award.

After almost forty years of weaving his magic with audiences, and with a voice as clear and resilient as ever, Kenny credits teenage daughter Julia as inspiration for continuing to live his childhood dream. In September 2003, as befits a national institution, Kenny Shields and Streetheart were inducted into the Western Canadian Music Association Hall of Fame.

jeff neills bio

JEFF NEILL
BACK TO BIOS PAGE

Born and raised in Sault Ste.Marie, Jeff grew up listening to hit radio and was inspired by the British Invasion to pick up the guitar. By the time he was 11 he was playing bass and singing in any band in the neighbourhood that could stumble through any recognizable version of Jimi Hendrix’ "Foxy Lady" or Vanilla Fudge’s "You Keep Me Hangin’ On". It was during those early years that Jeff discovered two of the most important things about being in a rock and roll band... girls and cigarettes.

By the time Jeff was 14 he decided he needed to switch to guitar and promptly went down to the local pawn shop/pool hall and traded in his bass for an electric 6 string guitar which he informed his parents about a week or so later.Always supportive,Mom and Dad weren’t quite sure but after a slightly imperfect version of Hendrix’ "The Star Spangled Banner" they were truly convinced...it was already too late.

At 18 Jeff went out on the road and played the Western Canadian club scene, primarily with a very popular band called Shama. Ironically enough one other group that also had the same kind of drawing power at that time was Kenny Shields and Witness. It was during that key period that Jeff got to know Kenny, Daryl and Spider a little bit but even more importantly he got to see just how good those guys really were. Needless to say that when Streetheart finally broke onto the scene Jeff was a huge fan and followed their career very closely. So it was no surprise that when the opportunity came to audition for the band Jeff knew this was his chance and it was his passion and enthusiasm for the band that most likely got him the job. Jeff’s debut album with Streetheart was the self-titled "Streetheart " album which would go on to be the bands biggest seller of all time. Jeff co-wrote all of the songs along with Kenny, Daryl and Spider and it was the first in a series of platinum records that he would subsequently earn.

After Streetheart broke up in 1984 Jeff returned to Vancouver which had been his home since early 1977. He was doing studio session work there when he was asked to play guitar for Australian singer Jimmy Barnes. What started out initially as a 3 month American concert tour grew into an 11 year career that saw Jeff moving to Australia and touring the world with Jimmy, spending several years in Europe, earning numerous multi-platinum records as a writer and guitarist as well as doing festivals and shows with The Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, ZZ Top, Sting and INXS.

Jeff returned to Canada in 1997 and got back into studio work as a writer and arranger for Disney and in advertising for radio and television. He had been doing a few Streetheart shows on and off until late 2003 when Jeff and Kenny agreed to have one more pedal down go of it and Jeff has been back full time with Kenny Shields and Streetheart since then. Jeff brings his considerable experience and influence to the stage every night of every show and after all this time it’s still easy to see the clear dedication he has towards his bandmates, fans and his craft. When he isn’t doing the Streetheart stuff, Jeff works as an arranger and independant music producer. He is actively involved in artist development with new and established acts, intends on breaking par and now knows that two of the most important things about being in a rock and roll band are to always remember where you come from, and, if you get lost...stop soloing and get back to the groove.
The roots of Streetheart include the members belonging to just about every group the prairies had to offer during the 70's, often with one another. Keyboardist Daryl Gutheil was in Wascana in '74 when Regina's Spider Sinnaeve joined on bass, replacing Gutheil's brother Don. Along with future Crowcuss guitarist Bob Deutscher they relocated from Toontown to The 'Peg later that year. Kenny Shields, then singing with A Group Called Mudd then joined the group. They relocated to Saskatoon and changed their name to Witness. With drummer Herb Ego, they moved to Edmonton in 1975.
After a year there and a pair of moderately-received singles, the group more or less disbanded. Gutheil, Sinnaeve and Shields moved back to Regina, where they soon recruited guitarist Paul Dean from Calgary and Edmontonian Matt Frennette on drums. One last name change and Streetheart was born. The group paid their proverbial dues for the next couple of years honing their chops, all the while building a small, grass-roots following who enjoyed their simple but tight, hard-edged style.

The group was signed to Capitol Records in 1978 and that same year released what is widely considered one of Canadian rock's best debut records of all time, MEANWHILE BACK IN PARIS. Backed by the energy of the first single"Look At Me", the record's depth was solidified by "Pressure", "Just For You", "People Taking Pieces of Me" and their swan song, "Action". George Semkiew's style of straight, no-frills-heavy on the guitars-bar room feel production pushed the record to gold status.

1979 saw Dean leave the group to form Loverboy. With new axeman John Hannah, the newly-reformed quintet cut UNDER HEAVEN OVER HELL later that year, and contained what would become their biggest single, a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb" and a cover of The Faces' "Here Comes The Night". Noteable about this album is it was recorded in Quebec and behind the helm were veterans Nick Blagona and Manny Charlton. Blagona's engineering expertise blended with the studio tricks up Charlton's sleeve he learned as the guitarist/producer for Nazareth to further cement Streetheart as one of Canada's most under-rated and promising talents. Prior to the upcoming tour, Frennette left to join The Headpins briefly, then to team up with Paul Dean again in Loverboy. With Ego returning behind the drum kit, the band hit the road touring the country, continually building on their reputation as one of Canada's most exciting live groups.

The band released QUICKSAND SHOES in late 1980. Numbers like the singles "Joke's On You", "Dragging You Down" and "Teenage Rage" fed the fans who craved the sophisticated but heavy thunder the group had become known for, while the instrumental "Highway Isolation" showcased the group's depth and versatility. By this time the group's live shows were the highlight of all medium-sized venues from Winnipeg to the west coast.

DRUGSTORE DANCER followed the next summer and was supported by the title track. The shear force of "Hollywood", John Hannah's best riff in "Trouble" and the powerful harmonies of "Tin Soldier" further helped push their fourth record to platinum status. Though the group tried touring practically every corner of Canada and south of the border, their strongest holding was still the western provinces.

A greatest hits package entitled ACTION - THE BEST OF STREETHEART was released later that year and was followed in 1982 by their platinum record simply entitled STREETHEART. Reunited with producer Semkiew, the group saw three tracks hit the airwaves, including the hit power ballad "What Kind of Love Is This". "One More Time" and "Snow White" on the other hand not only played on every car radio in Canada that summer but, along with "Without Your Love", quickly became common repeats on every bar dj in the country's request list. Their brand of bar-room style concerts were finally catching on in central and eastern Canada, shooting the album past the platinum sales mark.

DANCING WITH DANGER was released that same year and contained the hits "You're Not The Only One" and "Too Hot To Stop", as well as the title-track and "Midnight Love". With new guitarist Jeff Neil and Billy Carmassi taking over on drums - thou still a fine piece of work, some of Streetheart's lustre had tarnished during the time off from the road. The other tracks like "Coming True" failed to meet the critics' expectations considering the success of their last studio record. The cross-country tour that followed resulted in LIVE AFTER DARK. Released in 1983 it was pieced together from the shows done in Edmonton, Winnipeg and Regina. Unfortunaltely though by this time conflicts with management had gotten in the way of the group's creativity. This along with a lack of hunger and focus caused their breakup by late 1983.

Capitol released BURIED TREASURES the next year, a collection of tracks which previously hadn't made it off the cutting room floors and cheesy ploys on their part saw an alternate version of "Look In Your Eyes" as the lead single. Though definitely nothing special, the record is worth seeking out as a collectible. Another compilation was released in 1989 in the company's "Over Sixty Minutes With ..." series. A good mix of the band's studio work as well as the live material made the disc pretty much a necessity for any true Canadian rock fan.

The group splintered off to do their own things in the mid 90's, which included Sinnaeve go on to work with other artists such as Tom Cochrane, Lee Aaron, and is now the permanent bassplayer in Loverboy. In one form or another Streetheart was still reuniting for the occasional gig, including Frennette return behind the skins for a show in his hometown of Edmonton in 1999 - the first time with Shields and the gang in 20 years. Kenny Shields and Streetheart have enjoyed a loyal home-grown base of fans throughout their career, seeing four platinum and two gold records.

Streetheart - Featuring Kenny Shields

During his stint in the late '60's with Witness Inc., Kenny Shields nearly died in a devastating car accident in 1969. Band activities were suspended while the band waited for him to recuperate. Unfortunately, one arm and leg were so badly injured it took him until 1975 to fully recover and regain the confidence to return to centre stage. He attempted to reform Witness Inc. with former drummer Craig Kaleal, Spider Sinneave and Gutheil, but it was soon abandoned in favour of a better offer to join former Great Canadian River Race members Paul Dean (Scrubaloe Caine) and Matt Frenette to create Streetheart in 1976.

Following a year of slugging it out from their homebase in Regina, Saskatchewan to an impressive response on the Western bar circuit, Streetheart were soon signed to Atlantic Records in 1977 by Gary Muth. Their debut, 'Meanwhile Back In Paris' sold 100,000 copies in 1977.

A personality conflict soon erupted and Dean and Frenette left in 1978 to form Loverboy. Their replacements were John Hannah (guitar) and Herb Ego (drums). Two more albums followed, 'Under Heaven Over Hell' (1979) and 'Quicksand Shoes' (1980) before the band switched to Capitol Records.

Jeff Neill (H.U.N.N, Shama) replaced Hannah on guitar for 1981's 'Drugstore Dancer' and 1983's 'Dancing With Danger' both of which went platinum in Canada.

The band split up in the mid-80's, but during their successful career, Streetheart accumulated 6 gold albums, 4 of those going on to sell platinum; they also had one gold single for "Under My Thumb."

Streetheart reunited for some festival tours and small club dates in 1996 with the original line-up at the exact same time as Frenette and Dean were doing double duty with Loverboy.

12. Over 60 Minutes with...Streetheart. 1989. Capitol Records

A collection of live and studio recordings, this CD was one in a series of "Over 60 Minutes With..." released by Capitol Records in the late 80's. Since this CD was issued 5 years after the band had officially broken up, this CD was primarily a record company project and had very little artist input. Interesting to note, this was the very first Streetheart "record" that was NOT initially released on vinyl.
TRACKS:

1. Hollywood (Live)
2. Just For Your (Live)
3. What Kind Of Love Is This
4. Drugstore Dancer
5. Teenage Rage
6. Miss Plaza Suite
7. Tin Soldier
8. Trouble
9. Action (Live)
10. Look In Your Eyes
11. Comin' True
12. Without Your Love
13. One More Time
14. Under My Thumb
15. Snow White (Live)
16. Have It Your Way

13. STREETHEART • The Essentials 2005 WEA International

An unauthorized best of compilation worth the purchase price if only for those late 70’s fashion photos of the band. Contains most of Streetheart’s favorite songs but once again, without any artist input, one could argue about the choice of the material offered on this CD. Since when did Main Street become a big Streetheart hit? Hey...guys...come on.
TRACKS:

1. Under My Thumb
2. Hollywood
3. Here Comes the Night
4. What Kind of Love is This
5. Action
6. Tin Soldier
7. Main Street
8. Look at Me
9. Pressure
10. Can You Feel It
11. Miss Plaza Suite
12. Joke's On You
